· start with the right setting (Jazushi of course!)
· take bunch of really good tunes by such greats as Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Ellington, Gershwin (sift through 20th century repertoire)
· improvise (‘spontaneously compose’) the material according to one’s musical philosophy - introductions, accompaniment, tempos, endings, and overall mood and feeling
· liberally infuse with ‘the Blues’ – even in the most tender ballad!

Tamis Hunter is a Sydney based pianist, currently studying jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium. He performs regularly in Sydney and has performed internationally in Tokyo alongside trumpeter Terumasa Hino. In 2022, he played on the main stage at the Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival. Tamis’ playing is inspired by jazz greats such as Bud Powell and Bill Evans.
Entertaining at Jazushi, Paul Sun is a Sydney-based jazz vocalist and double-bassist likened to jazz greats such as Bobby Darin and Chet Baker for his smooth vocals and swinging style. Performing a wide range of popular Jazz, Blues & Latin-jazz standards from the early 20’s to the swingin’ 50’s, Paul's duo (featuring pianist Tim Bruer or guitarist Mark Batty) channels the era when Jazz was King and Cool was Swing.
Nadia Fried completed a Bachelor of Music, Honours degree in 1993 at Queensland University, where she was also a recipient of the Margaret Nickson Prize for vocal accompaniment. In 2006, she completed a Master of Teaching, First Class Honours degree at Sydney University, specializing in music education.
As the pianist in ‘The Libertango Trio’, Nadia has recorded live at The Basement and was selected for Musica Viva’s CountryWide touring program in 2006. She has performed at the Woodford International Folk Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival, and Sydney International Tango Festival. Nadia has worked as a resident pianist in five star hotels in Sydney, Brisbane, and the Goldcoast. As a professional accompanist, she has worked with professional opera singers, music theatre productions, jazz singers, cabaret artists, and choirs.
Yutaro Okuda is a Japanese-Australian jazz guitarist/composer based in Sydney, having graduated with honours from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where he studied with Steve Brien, James Muller and Carl Morgan.
Yutaro performs regularly in Sydney’s contemporary jazz scene as both sideman and leader, currently focusing on his quartet (FKA yutrio.bandcamp.com) as well as being part of collaborative project Arcing Wires (arcingwires.bandcamp.com).
At Jazushi Surry Hills, Yutaro presents fortnightly performances of classic jazz standards in solo, duo or trio formats.

Aaron relocated to Sydney in 2011 after a four year stint of playing in Japan as an active pianist on the Tokyo Jazz Scene including a stint at the internationally renowned “New York Bar and Grill” at the Shinjuku Park Hyatt hotel, as featured in the 2003 blockbuster "Lost in Translation".
Since moving to Sydney, Aaron has made a name for himself as a soloist performing with the likes of Mike Rivett, Hamish Stuart, Jonathan Zwartz, Cameron Undy, Andrew Crago, Mike Avgenicos, Tim Firth and many more of Australia's top musicians.

Monique Lysiak Has worked as a professional musician for the past 30 years. She has studied in New York with Barry Harris, Tommy Flanagan and Kenny Barron. She has also been involved in music education and jazz improvisation for over 30 years. She regularly teaches jazz workshops with the Sima Group for young women wanting to develop skills in jazz music.
